Spring 1

English

Year 1 are beginning our new topic ‘Word Detectives’. Children take on the roll of detectives to investigate spelling patterns and rules. After half term, we will begin our next poetry topic which focusses on pattern and rhyme.
Maths
We are currently working on addition and subtraction within 20, with a strong focus on exploring and learning number bonds to 20. The children have used a range of resources in class to help them, such as Numicon, Base 10 and two-sided counters. Our next topic will move onto looking at numbers within 50 and begin to look at multiples of 2, 5 and 10.
IPC
The children are really enjoying our current topic ‘The Magic Toymaker’! We have so far completed lots of History topics and are now beginning Science lessons. We have looked at lots of toys from the past and present and are thinking about what toys are made of. We have introduced our Big Question for the term:Are new toys better than old toys? You can get involved with your child’s learning by asking them about this question and discussing their answer. We have also sent home the Learning Logs with lots of magic toymaker tasks so please do have a look at those and bring any work back to school! We are very excited about our trip to Legoland on Friday 7th February to explore all the different toys.
Science
We are now running our Science topic alongside IPC. Our topic this term is ‘Super Humans’, which encourages children to think about all the wonderful things that our bodies can do! We are particularly focussing on our senses with our Big Question for the term: What is the most important sense and why? As with IPC, you can see our Knowledge Organisers and homework tasks in the purple IPC Learning Logs books.

Autumn 2

English

Year 1 are reaching the end of our non-fiction topic ‘Who Lives Here?’ which has involved lots of autumn exploring. The children went on a nature walk around the school grounds and then wrote their very own nature diary to reflect on what they found! Over the next few weeks we will be focussing on our next poetry topic, ‘Poetry Star’ where children will learn different poems and become performers.
Maths
We are currently working on addition and subtraction within 10, with a strong focus on exploring and learning number bonds to 10. The children have used a range of resources in class to help them, such as Numicon, Base 10 and two-sided counters.
IPC
The children are really enjoying our current topic ‘The Circus Is Coming To Town’! We have so far completed Art, History and Science topics all focussing on what life was like in a circus. We have introduced our Big Question for the term: how would animals feel being in the circus? You can get involved with your child’s learning by asking them about this question and discussing their answer. We have also sent home the Learning Logs with lots of circus-themed tasks so please do have a look at those and bring any work back to school!
Nativity
In the lead up to Christmas, we have begun to look at some songs for our nativity! Over the next few weeks, Year 1 will learn different dances and songs ready for the big performance. The children are so excited and we can’t wait to see you all there on the day!
